Overview

Stairs fail in two directions. Structurally, when footings are shallow or a landing isn't tied in and the whole flight pulls away from the building. And legally, when rise, run, guard height or handrail graspability don't meet Code — which shows up at inspection, at closing, or in a liability claim.

We build exterior stairs as the structure they are: footings to frost depth, reinforcement sized to the span, consistent geometry throughout the flight, and guards and handrails that meet the requirement rather than approximately meet it.

What we do

  • Cast-in-place concrete stairs
  • Precast stair installation and setting
  • Steel stairs and pan-fill treads
  • Timber and composite stairs
  • Landings and porch slabs
  • Replacement of settled or failed flights
  • Guards and handrails to Code
  • Aluminum, steel and glass railing
  • Barrier-free ramps and landings
  • Basement walk-out stairs and wells
  • Multi-unit common-area stairs
  • Repair, resurfacing and nosing restoration

Geometry

Rise and run consistent across the flight and inside Code limits, with no single step out of tolerance — the most common reason a stair fails inspection.

Footings and tie-in

Below frost line, sized to the load, with the landing tied to the structure correctly so the flight doesn't rotate away from the building over a few winters.

Guards and handrails

Guard height and opening limits to the Building Code, and a handrail profile that can actually be gripped. We fabricate or install supplied railing.

Engineered work

On commercial and multi-unit projects we build to the stamped drawings — steel stringers, pan-fill treads, embedded plates and the connection details as specified.

Commercial

Structural Stairs for commercial& multi-unit properties.

Exit stairs, common-area flights and loading-dock steps built to the stamped drawings, with the guards and handrails the Code and your insurer expect.

  • Steel stairs and pan-fill treads
  • Cast-in-place concrete flights
  • Common-area and exit stairs
  • Loading dock stairs and platforms
  • Guards and handrails to Code
  • Barrier-free ramps and landings
  • Precast setting and grouting
  • Nosing and tread restoration
Process

How a jobactually runs.

  1. 01

    Site visit

We walk the property with you — grades, drainage, access, what you actually use the space for. No guesswork from a satellite photo.

  2. 02

    Design & quote

A layout, material selections and a transparent line-by-line price. You see what you're paying for before anything is ordered.

  3. 03

    Permits where needed

Hamilton driveway approvals, building permits, conservation authority and heritage approvals — we confirm what your address needs and handle the application.

  4. 04

    Build & walkthrough

Base prep done properly, a crew that cleans up daily, and a walkthrough at the end where we go over maintenance and stand behind the work.

Questions

Straight answers.

My front steps are pulling away from the house. Can they be repaired?

Sometimes. If the footing is sound and the issue is surface or a settled landing, repair is realistic. If the flight was poured on fill with no footing — very common on older porches — replacement is the honest answer.

Do exterior stairs need a permit?

Replacing existing stairs in the same configuration often doesn't; new stairs, a changed configuration, or anything attached to the structure usually does. We confirm with your municipality before starting.

Can you do steel stairs for a commercial building?

Yes — steel stringers, pan-fill treads and guards built to the stamped drawings, including multi-unit common-area and exit stairs.

What about accessibility ramps?

We build barrier-free ramps and landings to the slope, width and landing requirements the standard sets, including handrails and tactile surface indicators where required.

Superior Landscaping Design Construction recently completed a driveway extension for us and also refinished the existing interlock, leveling it out beautifully. They topped everything off with a sealer coat, and the end result looks fantastic. The price was reasonable, the workmanship was solid, and the team was great to work with. I highly recommend them if you're looking for quality landscaping and driveway work done right.
